(UroToday.com) The Sunday Plenary at the AUA 2025 Annual Meeting in Las Vegas included a panel discussion on “Challenging Cases in Recurrent Urinary Tract Infections,” featuring experts in urology and female pelvic medicine. This panel included Drs. Henry Okafor, Lynn Stothers, A. Lenore Ackerman, and Farzeen Firoozi.
The panelists presented challenging clinical cases involving patients with recurrent Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs). They discussed diagnostic strategies, including detailed patient histories, imaging, and cystoscopy when indicated. The session highlighted the importance of identifying contributing factors such as hormonal status, urinary retention, and anatomical abnormalities.
Prevention strategies were emphasized, including the use of vaginal estrogen therapy in postmenopausal women and non-antibiotic preventive measures such as behavioral modifications. The panel also stressed the careful use of prophylactic antibiotics and the principles of antimicrobial stewardship to limit the development of resistance.
Surgical management options were discussed for selected cases involving structural causes of recurrent infections. The session underscored the necessity of a multidisciplinary, individualized approach to treatment, often involving both urologic and urogynecologic expertise.
Overall, the panel provided attendees with practical, case-based strategies for managing patients with complex recurrent urinary tract infections and reinforced the importance of innovation and evidence-based care in this common clinical challenge.
