A Comparison of Renal Cell Carcinoma with Tumor Thrombus Across North America, Central/South America, and South Korea - Beyond the Abstract

Our article entitled “A comparison of renal cell carcinoma with tumor thrombus across North America, Central/South America, and South Korea” represents three years’ worth of a successful collaborative effort by the Intercontinental Collaboration on Renal Cell Carcinoma (ICORCC) research group. ICORCC started in 2022, with the goal of studying renal cell carcinoma with a tumor thrombus. Initially, we had 40 patients and just one institution participating.

Now, nearly three years later, we have accumulated data on over 500 patients and have over ten institutions participating. As ICORCC grew, our research group began to realize there were significant differences in management and outcomes by the geographical location where a patient received most of their care. While health inequities are well established across the world, we realized there was minimal data examining renal cell carcinoma with a tumor thrombus. Although not necessarily unexpected given the rarity of renal cell carcinoma with a tumor thrombus, we saw an opportunity and a need to write this paper to highlight the significant discrepancies we identified. It is our research group’s hope that this manuscript leads to practice changes with the goal of establishing the best outcomes for all afflicted with this disease.
